Antelope Valley: Building a life underground

12/31/2018

The Antelope Valley is located in northern Los Angeles County and is home to more than 3,600 homeless residents, but only contains one shelter with just 100 beds.

Although most of the area’s homeless live unsheltered, the problem is difficult to spot. Many of them live in tents and makeshift homes deep in the Mojave Desert, hidden by Joshua trees and other desert flora.

They scavenge for food, water and materials to construct their homes and protect themselves from the harsh desert climate and dangerous wildlife such as coyotes, snakes and scorpions.

One man, who has asked to remain anonymous, dug into the desert and built a bunker fully furnished, complete with a bed, closet and storage space.

He used found materials he collected over the past three years. His underground home is functional enough to last a lifetime, but he says he does not want to be there forever. He is working to get a job and get his life back on track.
